Saifa Nawaz’s story of transformation at GRIRR
Saifa Nawaz, 4-year-old girl from Burtala, was diagnosed with delayed development due to cerebral palsy. Her health was at risk due to a lack of nutritious food and medication. Her family came from a financially challenged background.
A comprehensive assessment revealed that she struggled to stand or walk, spending most of her time lying down.
GRIRR’s intervention marked a turning point. Dedicated physiotherapists designed and deployed anklefoot orthosis. Home-based therapy sessions, combined with consistent exercises, accelerated her improvement.
Saifa does not need to spend her entire staring at the ceiling while being confided to her bed. She can now walk around her room (with supervision).
Special education
52,000
Treatments conducted in FY24
There are a number of children who have special needs – needs that customized solutions. We provide special education customized around children with special educational needs. This approach is founded on the belief that every child, regardless of ability or challenge, has the right to quality education.
GRIRR provides special education in a community with limited awareness. Our community mobilizer is principally engaged in demolishing myths and misconceptions: it fundamentally addresses the perception that children with intellectual disabilities or autism cannot improve their intelligence. The result of our commitment is that 70 of 100 such children have been enrolled in daily educational classes.
Rahat Molla’s story of transformation at GRIRR
Rahat Molla is a 4-year-old. He was born autistic. He struggled at making eye contact, could not speak, was hyperactive and found it difficult to sit motionless.
GRIRR’s special educator developed an Individualized Education Program for Rahat with a personalized rehabilitation plan. After nine months, Rahat could speak in phrases, sing and recite poems. He responded to requests for handing objects; he could study; he could identify objects (fruit, vegetables, and colours).
Our next aim: get Rahat admitted to a public school.

A number of children with disabilities suffer challenges related to speech. Our expert speech therapists are equipped to provide a customised solution: assess, diagnose, and provide therapies that manage speech, language, voice, and swallowing difficulties. The aim of our speech therapy is to maximize communication and swallowing potential. Our therapy programs support optimal functions across every stage of a child’s treatment (diagnosis to recovery, and, in some cases, during palliative care).
Navika Srivastav’s story of transformation at GRIRR
Navika Srivastav, 8, encountered speech cum hearing impairment.
Her father is a daily wage worker; her mother a homemaker.
Following a comprehensive assessment and an individual rehabilitation plan, GRIRR structured sign
language sessions for her.
Initially, Navika struggled to lipread; she could only pronounce vowels. In just six months, Navika began to recite the alphabet, name fruits, and improved her writing. She now uses sign language to express and can dance.
GRIRR plans to enroll her in a formal school.
Assistive technology services
278
Number of appliances provided in FY24
At GRIRR, we believe that the right assistive products can improve an individual’s functions and independence. This is an increasingly relevant service: only 3% of those in need obtain these life-transforming products. These products (orthoses, prostheses, wheelchair, walking aids, specialized chairs and standing frames) are designed and prescribed for enhanced effectiveness.
What makes our presence in this space credible is that with meagre resources, we created an orthopedic workshop to manufacture assistive devices. Our technicians conduct assessments, followed by casting, trials, and final fitment sessions. The result is that each child receives customized appliances that enhance convenience.
Mohammad Altamash’s story of transformation at GRIRR
Mohammad Altamash, 3 years, suffered from Rickets(Bilateral Genu Varum). He lives with his widowed mother and three siblings.
GRIRR found him in a door-to-door survey.
We planned a rehabilitation intervention plan for him which included physiotherapy, Calcium and vitamin medications, diet, & aids and appliances.
We provided him with bilateral knee orthosis which reduces tightness and minimizes deformities. Now 80% of his deformity is corrected and he walks like other children of his age.
Health services
1,668
Number of treatments undertaken in Bihar in FY24
1,234
Number of treatments undertaken in Garden Reach in FY24
72
Number of cataract surgeries undertaken in FY24
In a marginalised Garden Reach, there is negligible access to healthcare. We feel that competent healthcare prevents disease through early detection, improves life quality, and increases life expectancy. GRIRR organizes periodic health camps for the benefit of children with disabilities (in addition to their siblings, parents, and caretakers).
GRIRR Bihar organized a health check-up camp in Murarpur village (in collaboration with Akhand Jyoti Eye Specialist Hospital and the Bihar Volunteer Health Association). Over 300 residents benefited as the nearest facility was 10 km away.
Doodhi Rai’s story of transformation at GRIRR
Doodhi Rai, 78 years, lived alone with his wife. Their children did not look after them. He had cataract but he could not afford the corrective surgery. Also, there was no nearby hospital in his village Murar Pur, Chapra, Bihar.
GRIRR identified him and got his cataract operation done free of cost. The team of Akhand Jyoti Hospital did the screening through its mobile medical camp.
Now completely recovered. He is grateful to GRIRR for their contribution.
Occupational therapy
3,458
Number of students trained in FY24
Our occupational therapy goal is to address specific issues (weak grasp, poor attention span, handwriting challenges, visuo-perceptual issues and motor skill deficits). To counter these, the occupational therapist works with children and their parents.
For children with autism and hyperactivity, occupational therapy aims to develop essential skills that enhance their ability to function and learn. This includes improving social skills, self-care, sensory integration, motor and cognitive abilities, coping strategies, and play skills.
Sheikh Rasdan story of transformation at GRIRR
Sheikh Rasdan stayed two days in the NICU at birth.
Diagnosed with Autism 2, Rasdan struggled with poor eye contact, limited mobility, inability to hold a pencil, and low socialization.
GRIRR’s focused occupational therapy addressed these issues through gym ball exercises, treadmill walking, sensory integration, jumping, and tapping.
Within months, Rasdan achieved independent mobility. The GRIRR team is helping him walk independently.
Livelihood for youth
with disabilities
152
Number of students placed to the job from 2015 to 2024
Youth with disabilities face significantly higher unemployment rates compared to their peers due to various barriers, including:
- Negative self-perception and lack of confidence
- Inaccessible environments
- Limited awareness among employers
- Inequities in education and skill development
In areas like Garden Reach and Metiabruz, there is a lack of skill training centers, leaving youth, especially those who have completed 10+2, without opportunities to acquire essential skills. As a result, many lose interest in productive pursuits and are vulnerable to being drawn into anti-social activities.
We have partnered with other NGOs to provide skill training and job placement for these youth to address this. Every year, we train and place approximately 170 youth in various trades, reducing unemployment and empowering them to lead better lives.
Our organization is committed to promoting economic independence and dignity for adults
with physical, intellectual, and psychiatric disabilities, as well as individuals from other vulnerable
communities. Additionally, our outreach efforts focus on creating awareness about inclusion and
advocating for disability rights.

- Introduce new ideas and perspectives to businesses and communities
- Foster happier and healthier environments for children with disabilities
By providing resources, training, and opportunities, we envision a transformative impact on the lives of children with disabilities and the women striving for self-reliance. Through this initiative, we aim to uplift women, enabling them to grow economically and socially while fostering stronger, more resilient communities.

Faizan’s father works as a laborer in a cloth shop, so he earns only ₹8000 per month. His mother joined GRIRR and gets rehabilitation from there and meets her expenses from the GRIRR tailoring unit.
Her mother is a perfect tailor, and she knows very well how to cut clothes, due to which we appointed her as the secretary of the self-help group and today she is the leading manager of our tailoring unit.
